If your wife has told you she is thinking about a divorce, my first thought is you need to keep on your toes so you can protect your interests if you need to. I have written about doing this extensively and if you click my author name link above you will find lots of information on winning your divorce.

This time however I want to talk to the men who are actively trying to save their marriages. My heart goes out to you, it is not the easiest position to be in. Nevertheless here are some tips, and if you keep reading to the end you’ll find a link to a great system for rebuilding relationships and winning your love back.

1. You will probably only get one shot at this so tread lightly, don’t try to rush things. She is angry, probably for something you did or didn’t do. She may need some time to get past this. Don’t lay out some big logical sounding plan, emotions are at work here and you need to find a way to tap back into some of the good things that have existed between the two of you in the past.
2. Don’t try to bribe her by sending special presents and flowers. Anyone can send flowers — better to put your efforts into a handwritten, sincere, and heartfelt note with the thought of trying to tap into some of the good times the two of you had. The idea is not to sell her that these times are too good to throw away, or that we’ll have them again: rather just bring them up to do battle by themselves with whatever it is that has brought the two of you to this point. Be honest — feel the words you write and do not try to manipulate.
3. I’ll say again, don’t try to rush her. Whatever has happened between the two of you has to soften in her mind. But, do be sure to let her know that she is important to you and you want to keep her in your life.
4. If you are separated — don’t you dare stalk her. Don’t make plans to always try to be where you think she will be. This is a losing strategy and it will just further inflame her feelings and alienate her. If you do wind up in divorce court these kinds of actions can cost you big time. I do want to mention again, particularly because things have progressed to separation, you want to be sure that you are protecting yourself if the divorce process is in play (see the first paragraph).

John Gray said it in the title to his famous book: “Men Are From Mars And Women Are From Venus.” I want to tell you again not to try to lay out some totally logical argument as the reason for the two of you to stay married. This is a mans approach and believe me, it won’t go very far no matter what the logic. The place the battle to save your marriage will be won or lost is how well you can tap into and shape her emotions.

I want my ex back now. If that is what’s going on in your head, be patient. The “I want it now” attitude is maybe a factor in how you busted up in the first place. Most relationships break up over simple, stupid things. Impatience is one of these things. Regardless of the reason you want to know: how can I get together again with my ex.

1. Arrange a meeting in a public place. You need to begin communications if you expect to get together. Having the meeting in a public place will help both of you keep your emotions under control.
2. Both of you need to understand what happened if you want to fix the broken relationship. If it was a specific event or a series of things identify what has caused the break up.
3. Be honest and open about your feelings. A relationship needs two way communications, watch your words but be honest about your feelings. Be descriptive so you can be understood. Remember that most people are not mind readers.
4. Cage the nuance. This means really listen as your partner describes their feelings. Often our minds are at work on some internal dialog and we pay no attention. Really work on this because if you don’t know what your partner is communicating you can’t fix it.
5. Perhaps bring a small gift, a single flower perhaps.

Be clear in your communication, keep the conversation civil. Talk about some good times and if the time seems right talk about ideas for the future. Fully understand the issue at hand – be sure that both of you do. If you are at fault apologize – don’t fix blame though. Rather discuss and come to understanding You have to have the feelings out there and you both have to be on the same page.

Don’t try to make your ex jealous or get into games or power trips – never try to “make” your ex take you back. Making someone do something is childish and it won’t last even if you do. But do make an effort to be at your best both in what you say and how you look.

If things go well, begin small dates, coffee, a movie, anything to have fun together. Don’t push it, keep communication going and you will get there. Your goal is to show them that there is still something special there, something worth working on together.

You might think its too bad you cant take a class called relationships 101 in college. They offer math, physics, literature and tons of classes, but a class on relationships is something that could help everyone. Most relationships, local or long distance, no matter what happens, can be saved. There are a few relationships that shouldnt be saved, like those that are abusive or really miserable. But most others have the potential to be fixed. That should be lesson number in any relationships 101 class.

The problem is, people give up too soon. Theyre angry, hurt, upset and it just seems easiest to get out of the situation that made them that way. Its all too easy to focus only on whats happening now, and not the past.

Sometimes one person can do it, but its not easy. Its hard to stay positive and hopeful when your boyfriend of girlfriend doesnt act or feel the same. It can start to feel like youre fighting a losing battle.

Relationships 101 lesson #2: Keep fighting the battle, because even if the relationship doesnt heal, it will make you a better person. Thats because the things youll do to try to save the relationship are simply good for you, and good for the other person, too.

Its very important to remember the way you behaved with the relationship was new and going strong. Compare that to how you behave with that person now. And turn things around by acting the way you used to, and doing the things you used to.

Strive to be polite again just as you were in the beginning. Be thoughtful and be a good friend to the person whenever you can, even if youre not going to get anything out of it. Dont beg them to come back, tell them they need to come back, or threaten what will happen if they dont come back.

When faced with someone acting like that, would you want to be with that person again? Tell yourself that youll survive no matter what happens, but do your very best to show them the person they want to be with again. Best the best you no matter what is the best relationships 101 lesson there is.
